Today marks the end of the 2010-2011 school year for students in our district. For them, that means a season of pool parties and big budget blockbusters. And it all kicks off this Memorial Day weekend.
Memorial Day marks the unofficial start to summer. A teaser for what's to come. Us grown people remember how our mothers and grandmothers warned us not to wear white until the last Monday in May. How many of us still follow that old rule?
If you had a military vet in your family, you may have heard some good stories that day. I remember "helping" (Ok, more like being told to stay away from the grill's open flames!) my grandfather barbecue, hoping that he would tell me again of how he led a platoon of soldiers through northern Africa. My heart swelled with pride, because I knew that in WWII, it was uncommon for an African-American man to hold a leadership position in the Army.
And today I'm proud again. My husband has just been promoted to sergeant! All of his hard work and dedication to God and the Army Chaplain Corps has brought him this far. I'll be celebrating his success and remembering all the heroes who served and are serving our country. Enjoy your weekend, and have a great Memorial Day!
